Uprooting Democracy

SCOPE:

Democracies are declining, even sliding into autocracies.

How are democracies being systematically hollowed?

Why and how are people blinded by capitalist and populist propaganda and manipulation, resulting in polarization, hatred, racism and violence, paving the way for neo-fascism?

This Online Dialogue is designed to answer the above and many other related issues and questions.

SPEAKERS:

DR. Ishtiaq Ahmed

• A Swedish political scientist and author of Pakistani descent.
• He obtained his PhD in Political Science from Stockholm University, where he is currently Professor Emeritus.
• During 2015-2019, he was a visiting professor at the Government College, Lahore.
• 2013-2015 Visiting Professor at the Lahore University of Management Sciences.
• An Honorary Senior Fellow of the Institute of South Asian Studies (ISAS) at the National University of Singapore.
• Visiting Research Professor at the Institute of South Asian Studies.
• Author of several books including "Punjab Bloodied”, “Pakistan - the Garrison State” and “Jinnah – His Successes, Failures and Role in History”.

Alia Amirali

• A Pakistani left-wing political worker and academician.
• She has been active on issues of gender and political participation.
• She has been working as Deputy General Secretary for the Awami Workers Party (2016–2019).
• She is also a lecturer in Gender Studies at Quaid-e-Azam University Islamabad.
• She is a PhD candidate at the London School of Economics, Gender Studies department.
• She earned her Bachelor's in Liberal Arts from Hampshire College USA in 2006.
• M. Phil in anthropology from Quaid-e-Azam University in 2010.
• Amirali mostly worked with the women among students, peasants or slum dwellers communities.
• She has published "Baluchistan: A Case Study of Pakistan’s peace-making praxis".
